Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) is a small plant native to South Africa, where three hundred years ago the Khoikhoi chewed the root for its relaxing effects. The Dutch who arrived in South Africa called it kaugoed, which means chewing substance.

It grows up to 30 cm tall with low growing branches and thick, fleshy leaves. The plant produces small but striking yellow flowers.

In the wild, Sceletium tortuosum has become more and more scarce and may very well be in danger of extinction. Cultivation is highly encouraged in order to preserve this remarkable plant species.

These kanna seeds come from a trusted source in South Africa, whose mission is to fight for the preservation of the species.

Kanna cultivation

Growing Sceletium tortuosum plants from seeds is very similar to growing cacti. Both cultivation and caretaking is considered to be quite easy. The recommend method of growing from seeds is to scatter them onto general cactus soil, press them down slightly and water. The germination time ranges between two weeks to two months.

Light and temperature

Although kanna generally tolerates cooler temperatures, a minimum temperature of 16°C (60°F) is ideal. If you want to place the plants outside, it's best to do so after the last frost. The plant prefers a sunny spot as this will encourage stronger growth, but always be mindful of too much direct sunlight, especially in the early stages of development.

Watering

Watering is the trickiest part of growing kanna and should be done with care. Too much water can lead to rot whereas too little impairs the growth rate. One way to tell if the plant is in need of water is to check for wrinkling on cooler days. In warm conditions some wrinkling is natural and not indicative of drought, so avoid the temptation to water too often.

When growing in pots, be sure to have proper drainage. Soil for growing cacti is also ideal for kanna. Water sparingly until root growth is well established.

stable plant developed from one seed (tried only to germinate one, was successful) in dutch early summer 2018, it is really big now (late summer) and I could already make clones from it. I wish I could upload a picture.. I will definitely germinate more of the seeds and spread a few of the plants in my home, they look really pretty as well.

Seeds germinated super faster after 3 day soak in water. Definitely fresh. I previously had difficulty finding viable seeds for this strain.

Van de 10 zaden is er maar eentje uitgekomen. Ik ben te werk gegaan volgens de aanbevolen manier.
