How to vape hash (part 3): Vaping hash in a VapCap ‘M’, Firefly 2, Pax 3 & a Mighty

19-12-2017 - 4 Kommentarer

This is the final instalment of my “vape hash trilogy”. I’m going to discuss the results from vaping hash in a selection of popular portable vaporizers on the market. I covered a good price range; starting at the very reasonable VapCap ‘M’ up to the expensive Firefly 2. In between, I also tested the Pax 3 and Mighty.

You may be interested in getting up to speed on the previous two parts of the trilogy; Part one: What is hash? and Part two: General Tips for vaping hash.

hash vaporizer test line-up

As described in my general tips for vaping hash I was using pollen type hash which I had ground using a heavy knife on a chopping board for this experiment.

Initially, I had 0.6 grams of Amnesia Haze hash and thought it a good idea to split this into quarters. However, after grinding the first quarter it was clear this would give me too much ground hash and I wouldn’t be able to fit it in the ovens of the vapes. In the end, I used 0.1 grams for each vape this fitted nicely into each of them.

In my initial tests with the resin, I found that I got a lot more draws than I normally would with dried herb. I’m certainly going to get very high off each of these loaded vaporizers!

I would recommend using the best quality pollen hash (or keif) you can get your hands on. You don’t want any contaminants messing up your vaporizer. I got the best results from light brown crumbly hash (pollen) dark resinous hash worked too but I was unable to get into as small chunks.

Amnesia Haze hash

Another recommendation is to get hold of some degummed hemp fibre before attempting this. The hash will melt and mess up your vaporiser if not protected by hemp fibre.

I photographed the before and after for each experiment so you can see what you are letting yourself into. I tested in the order that is presented here and learnt valuable lessons along the way. Some worked better than others and one didn’t work at all.

PAX 3 vaporizer

PAX 3

The PAX 3 led the way in sleek looking portable vapes that not only look good but perform well. It comes shipped with a cartridge that you can load up concentrates and oils with. I used that for the ground hash.

Loading into this cartridge was by far the most fiddly. I inserted some hemp fibre in the base so I would be sure I could get all the ground hash back out easily after it had been heated to a high temperature.

I had to poke the hemp around the two vents that are built into the cartridge for air flow. Then getting the hash on top was not the easiest - I used the blade of a sharp knife to scoop the ground hash in there.

Initially, I set the temperature to the maximum “concentrates” setting. The first draw was completely cool yet I exhaled a dense cloud - not billowing - but definitely dense. It tasted of the smell of fresh hash - not like the smell of burning hash when burnt in a pipe. I then reduced the temperature to mid setting and wished that I had started low and worked my way up - as I normally do with dried herb. Again, it had good results.

As predicted, I got very high. I did notice that when I drew again after the heat had been stopped it still got results. I assume this is due to the fact that it is conduction heated in the small metal canister within the heating oven.

I was plenty high enough but wanted to finish this tonight or else this experiment was going to take weeks. Before I took another draw I checked inside the oven. The fine powder that had once been there had been obliterated and was now a solidified mass that looked more like resin than pollen. It was mainly on the hemp fibre but some had gone up the vent leading to the pipe going to the mouthpiece - it was not getting up there thanks to a metal plate that stops anything passing, except vapour.

It was clear I needed to protect exposed hot areas in every vape I will use.

PAX 3 hash after

I heated it again and took three more hash tasting draws that seemed of nearly as high quality as the first. I was pretty sure this setup was going to give a lot more good draws. I decided to try a few more before retiring to bed. It was clear the Pax 3 had passed the test with flying colours.

The next day it was still going strong. I worked my way up to the maximum temperature and was getting tasty clouds all the way.

Finally, it just seemed to stop producing clouds. I noticed the battery was still on full level. The nice thing about the PAX 3 concentrate attachment is that you can remove it in case you fancied some dried herb instead of the hash. With the other three vapes tested this is not an option.

Storz & Bickel Mighty

To load the Mighty I inserted the “liquid pad”. It is rather like a compacted brillo pad - made from thicker wire - that fits into the oven. After seeing the results of the vaped hash in the PAX 3 I put a layer of hemp fibre over the liquid pad followed by 0.1 g of the ground hash. As the opening is big I easily put the ground hash on top of this. I added another layer of hemp fibre - to protect the upper gauze from getting clogged up with molten hash.

Mighty with hash

Little bits of hash fell around the gutter that surrounds the oven so I needed to poke them out. This is one of my few criticisms of the Mighty and also happens with ground weed from time to time.

I skipped the lower temperature and set the device to 200℃. I took three large draws. As expected the result was nothing short of spectacular. All three were heavily dense with a rich hash like taste in my mouth - not dissimilar to the taste of nibbling hash.

I opened the Mighty up to see what was happening inside. It was reminiscent of opening a diaper - albeit without the nasty smell. On closer inspection, it was amazing to see how the consistency of the hash had changed. It looked more resin like. I was pleased that the hemp fibre seemed to have completely stopped this sticky mess from gumming up the gauze and liquid pad.

Mighty hash after

I started the Mighty again and waited for the temperature to rise to the preselected 200°C. The resulting draws were all pleasant though after the third the taste was turning slightly sourer than those previous.

Compared to the PAX it pretty much out trumps everything - aside from a super sleek package. If you can live with a larger form factor and not being able to charge via USB then you really can’t go wrong with the Mighty, the price is not too distant from most of the fancy portable vapes on the market and once you own one you’ll appreciate paying those 10s of dollars or euros extra.

I got a few more draws from it at 210°C (max temp) before sleep. The taste changed quite a bit and it was clear that I had depleted the good stuff. I stopped as it did not taste pleasant anymore. Opening it up it was apparent that the hash had been pretty much nuked. The hemp fibre kept everything clean.

Firefly 2

To load I inserted a concentrate pad, put down a layer of hemp fibre and scooped the ground hash on top. I didn’t see the need to add another layer of fibre over the hash as I did in the Mighty. Of all the vapes this was the easiest to set up. The glass surface meant that anything that missed the bowl was simply pushed in. It also looks incredibly cool through the window on the top of the Firefly 2.

The Firefly 2 certainly looks cool, but is it any good for vaping hash?

I’m afraid not.

I set my Firefly to 200°C - as per my test with the Mighty - but I didn’t seem to be able to draw anything that resembled a cloud. Eventually, I had to stop as the buttons were getting so hot it was uncomfortable to hold. I held off a while then attempted again using the same technique I use for herb and concentrates - a slow long “slong” draw. I was finding it difficult to get good airflow.

The strange thing was, the hash appeared to have melted as per the other devices. I did feel a bit high, so I must’ve been getting something from it. I just wasn’t getting the definite clouds and strong hash taste that I did with the Pax and the Mighty.

I reduced the heat to 180°C and sucked away like crazy as if I was trying to light a huge cigar with a tiny match.

Still barely anything.

The fact that I could not draw well was making think maybe the issue was the combination of the concentrate pad and the hemp fibre. There is no way I’m not going to use the hemp fibre with hash in my Firefly 2 so I removed the concentrate pad - after waiting for it to cool. I tried again at 180°C with no result and then again at 210°C. Still nothing.

I opened it up again to check what was going on. The hash had melted but I didn’t seem to be gaining any of the delicious cannabinoids that should be released. Actually, the hash and fibre had risen within the oven and was stuck to the glass on the top window. Which is when I realised that the combination of the hash on the fibre must be blocking the airflow somehow. It seems that vaping hash in a Firefly using this technique is not working. I felt a little high but I was also feeling frustrated and disappointed - so gave up.

Firefly 2 hash afterwards

I was surprised the Firefly 2 had let me down. Maybe I’m missing something obvious and there is a way to vape hash from the Firefly 2? But I couldn’t figure out how.

If you know a way please let me know in the comments and I’ll happily test again and update this article accordingly.

It was easy to load and clean afterwards but if you don’t get any vapour what’s the point? Therefore the overall score is 1. It scored the 1 as I did feel a little high (nowhere near as high as with my other tests). Despite the mild high, I didn’t see any visual signs of vapour being released.

DynaVap VapCap “M”

The DynaVap VapCap “M” is a great little budget vape that you heat with a lighter rather than relying on battery power. It performs great with dried buds and has a lot of fans.

Loading the ground hash was tricky due to the small size of the opening of the vape. I used the DynaStash - a wooden case accessory which is sold separately - to hold it upright and scooped the hash in with the sharp end of a knife.

First, I inserted some degummed hemp fibre and then added 0.1 gram of ground hash on top. It just about fitted.

I knew this was going to work as I’ve already used it in the past to vape hash. For all the fanciness of the other vapes - with their temp controls and Bluetooth connections - it’s refreshing to get back to basics, whip out my trusty torch flame lighter and get to work.

In principle, vaping hash in the VapCap is not too far removed from inhaling hash that has been held between two hot knives, which was a method I’ve experienced. The results are similar too, although the process is a lot less seedy looking.

With dried herb, I normally get two good tasty clouds from my VapCap followed by two ok but not as pleasant draws before having to refill. With hash it’s different and I managed to squeeze out at least six (maybe more, I was not in the best state to count at this point) good hash tasting clouds before the taste started to change and become unpleasant enough to make me want to stop.

VapCap M with molten hash

Once I removed the spent hash and hemp fibre I noticed that there was a fair bit of molten hash in the inside of the bowl/oven that would need cleaning up. The hemp fibre stopped this from clogging up the small vents below.

VapCap M end result

If you would like an inexpensive portable vape that frees you from the constraints of having an electricity supply then the VapCap is your best option. As long as you don’t mind messing with mini blow torches and risking burnt fingers.

It is great for weed and also for hash. It’s a perfect intro to vaping for those on a budget and it’s a perfect second vape for those who already own a vape that doesn’t perform well with hash - I’m looking at you rich Firefly 2 owners out there.

For the money, you really can’t go wrong with a VapCap. At the end of the day, it’s all about the clouds and the VapCap “M” certainly brings the clouds.

Final conclusion

And there concludes my hash vaping trilogy. What a trip. The main takeaway here is that vaping hash is possible and “heavy”. If you are deprived of sleep maybe this is something you want to try to get yourself into the Land of Nod.

If you follow the general tips I imagine you could squeeze out some clouds from your hash with most vapes. Of the four I tested there are only two serious contenders. The Mighty and VapCap. If you can afford it, I would recommend the Mighty. It really is superb and the best portable vape I have used so far. For those on a budget or looking for a second vape then you cannot go wrong with a VapCap.

As for the other two contenders. Forget the Firefly 2 for vaping hash. I just couldn’t get anything out of it. The PAX 3 worked fine but was too fiddly to load and clean to recommend for vaping hash.

What’s your experience of vaping hash? Are there other portable vapes out there you recommend or tips that others need to know?

    Corrected text
FF2 works fine without concentrate pad and a pipe screen on top of the hash to keep it down, as well as from flying all over the mirror. This is done by bending and flattening the screen to secure hash. You keep bowl and mirrors clean with rubbing alcohol. You also have the pleasure of harvesting the condensate every few puffs.

Really curious about using the degummed hemp fiber technique with the DaVinci IQ!
Could you please consider testing this? I would like to buy a small slick portable vaporizer, but I only want to use it for hash/hasj, don't want a pen or butane needed vaporizer. ;)

Hey...Thanks for the article....was looking for something like this for awhile....i have tried but am not able to get my hands on degummed hemp fibre here ....do you think normal cotton (drug store kind) would be a workable replacement or can you suggest an alternative...Thanks

  • johnboy 07-07-2018 21:46:24

tried the cotton on the pax3 waiting on the fibre, but I cant even get a decent puff out of it in both chambers, Im really dissapointed in the pax 3 its 220 ffs. Help man
